What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is the use of violence by one person to control and dominate another. The term is used to describe any form of abuse that occurs in intimate personal relationships. The abuse may continue long after the relationship has ended. While the term is commonly used to describe abuse in intimate relationships, abuse occurring in other inter-personal realtionships may also be referred to as family violence.

Domestic violence is committed by men against women in 87% of cases (Access Economics 2004) . The abuse may be physical, where there is actual or attempted use of force intended to injure, control, hurt or make the woman afraid.

It may involve coercive or unwanted sexual activity. The abuse may be psychological, including emotional or verbal abuse and threatening or intimidating behaviours.

It may be in the form of social abuse, intended to isolate the partner from family, friends and other support networks, or financial abuse, where the partner controls access to money to reinforce a position of power.

Fear and intimidation are powerful ways a perpetrator can control the person. Domestic violence may be any or all of these forms of abuse.
